After dealing with a small computer glitch, it was time to turn around and head east, back out of California's Central Valley and into the Mojave. The long grade up the Tehachepi Mountains strains the fully loaded trucks on the their way east with loads of fruits, vegetables and industrial goods. After crossing the longest stretch of desert many of the truckers stop in the non-town of Four Corners, a wide spot in the road where US 395, the main north-south route east of the Sierras crosses Cal 58 the main road from the Central Valley to the busy networks of Interstates 15 & 40. Here at sundown this small Pilot truck stop with no more than 25 spaces for overnighters sees more traffic in a few hours than many larger truck stops see in a day. It is a veritable crossroads of the nation in miniature as I met drivers from all over the country. The biggest surprise was running into a driver from Denver who asked if I know Joe Rossi from Steamboat! He had married into the Rossi family. We had a fine chat as we talked about the 10,000 pound magnets he was hauling to an industrial project up north in Nevada. The small world department strikes again.
Till tomorrow,
