Alpine Loop
These adjacent but very different byways stretch across the eastern San Juan Mountains from South Fork to Silverton. The Silver Thread Sunday-drive route follows a meandering but paved state highway from town to town, while the Alpine Loop is a backcountry-wanderer’s delight, traversing gravel roads and jeep routes through spectacular scenery at nose-bleed heights.
